Strike a Pose: Lemon Grove Students Stay Fit with Yoga

Children are practicing a variety of yoga poses, getting exercise, and having a good time together.

Students in the Lemon Grove School District are experiencing the relaxing effects of yoga in an after-school program designed to increase their physical activity.

Offered by Yoga Rascals, a La Mesa yoga studio, through a collaboration with the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone, children are practicing a variety of yoga poses, getting exercise, and having a good time together. Yoga teacher Sünje O’Clancy leads the free classes through the district's Extended Day Program.

“Students are having lots of fun while learning the poses, as well as experiencing the calming and relaxing effects of yoga,” O'Clancy says. “Sharing the joy of yoga and seeing the smiles on the students’ faces has been extremely rewarding for all of us.”

The program was made possible through an alliance with the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone, a three-year project funded by a $1 million grant from Kaiser Permanente to give residents more opportunities for healthy eating and active living in the community. O'Clancy operates the Lemon Grove program pro bono.
