Treganza History Essay Winners

The three third-graders are students at Vista La Mesa Academy.

Three Vista La Mesa Academy students were chosen as this year’s winners of the Treganza History Essay Competiton. Open to third graders throughout the Lemon Grove School District, the annual contest this year required children to visit the Lemon Grove History Mural and choose a section on which they would write their essay.

First, second and third place awards were given. The 2011 winners are:

  • Travis Nishiyama, First Place.
  • Meisha Myers, Second Place.
  • Rachel Hua, Third Place.

Travis wrote his essay on the fourth panel of the mural, “The Rise of Lemon Grove in the ‘2nd Gold Rush,’ the Citrus Industry, 1888-1910.” Meisha and Rachel both chose “The World of the Kumeyaay, ca. 100 A.D.” the first mural section, for their essays.

Sponsored by the Lemon Grove Historical Society, the competition has taken place each year since 1990, when it was introduced by Dr. Amorita Treganza, the noted pediatric optometrist and longtime president of the historical society.

The winners were announced on June 7 during a presentation before the City Council meeting. Historical society secretary Josie Kane named the winners while Mayor Mary Sessom presided over the ceremony.  Each child received an award certificate and bag of prizes provided by the Kiwanis Club of Lemon Grove.
