The tournament kicks off with opening ceremonies Saturday in the $1.2 million Mansfield Stadium, built in 1991 with funds donated by horror writer and famed Bangor resident Stephen King. It is considered one of the finest ballfields in Maine.
The Lemon Grove Senior League All-Stars are one of five regional teams from the United States who will play in the 2012 Senior League Baseball World Series, starting Sunday. Other teams are coming from Canada, Guatemala, New Zealand, Italy, and the host district—Maine District 3.
Pool play takes place Sunday through Thursday. The semifinal is Friday, and the championship game is Saturday, Aug. 18. It will be broadcast on ESPN.
The All-Stars are the U.S. West champions, having beat World Series defending champions Hilo, Hawaii, 6-0 for the regional title.
