Girls Basketball: Matadors Fall in SoCal Regionals

Orange Lutheran holds Mount Miguel to 18 second-half points and pulls out to a 57-47 win.

It’s been no secret that Mount Miguel’s offense centered around three players–Danielle Miller, Myishia Watkins and Shay Young–all season.

It seems like opposing teams would realize that five players should be able to cover those three standouts. Apparently that wasn't the case, as Mount Miguel finished with a 24-8 record.

The curtain fell on the Matadors' season in Thursday’s Southern California Regional quarterfinal against Orange Lutheran, the state’s No. 1-ranked Division III unit in the CalHiSports.com poll. The Lancers (24-7) eliminated the Matadors 57-47 in a playoff game in Orange that wasn’t decided until midway through the final period.

“This group reached its potential and then some,” Mount Miguel coach Robbie Sandoval said. “Sure, we are disappointed that we came up short tonight. But I’m proud of these girls. They have nothing to hang their head about. They had a great year.”

The Matadors trailed by only two at the half, 29-28, but were held to nine points in each of the final two quarters. Miller had 21 points and Watkins 15 to account for most of the Matadors' offense.
