Mount Miguel Stuns Point Loma 41-7 as Defense Shines

The Matadors improve to 3-0; private school powerhouse Bishop's tops Monte Vista 50-14.

The final score was not what you might expect for a game matching two undefeated teams. Sure, host Mount Miguel High was ranked in the county's top 10 and had to be favored over Point Loma, but few expected such a totally one-sided game in Spring Valley on Friday night.

The Matadors, now 3-0, ran roughshod over the Pointers, limiting them to two first downs in the opening half and forcing six turnovers on the night in a surprisingly easy 41-7 victory.

A 21-point third quarter that put the Matadors in command and a stout defense kept Point Loma (2-1) from getting back into the game. Defensive end Cory Littleton chalked up three sacks while Trevion Wilson made three tackles for losses, including a sack.

“We try to do things that other teams don’t do,” said Mount Miguel coach Tom Karlo. “Like our no-huddle offense, which frustrates our opposing defenses. Imagine having only four days to prepare for what we do. . . that’s not easy.”

Running back Derrick Dunn scored three times for Mount Miguel, which put up all of its points in the second and third quarters. On defense, Henry Ingram scored on a 47-yard interception return, and defensive tackle Malcolm Jackson rambled 30 yards with a fumble return to set up another score.

“I wouldn’t say this was a perfect game for us, but it was darn close,” Karlo said.

Mount Miguel, the No. 6-ranked team in the county according to the Sportswriters/Sportscasters Poll, has a bye next Friday, but not by choice.

“This is not what we wanted,” Karlo said. “But we will take the time to perfect our game.”

The Matadors host Sweetwater on Sept. 30 before visiting Helix on Oct. 7 in a game that will be a real measure of the team's strength.

BISHOP’s 50, MONTE VISTA 14

Missed tackles and a sputtering offense by Monte Vista allowed the visiting Knights, who are the defending CIF Division IV state champions, to pull away in Friday's nonleague contest.

Senior running back James Sykes scored both of Monte Vista’s touchdowns, the first on a 60-yard run that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. He later would add a 6-yard reception for a score on a pass Gordy Juarez.

The Knights (2-0) from La Jolla shut out Monte Vista (1-2) in the second half while scoring 22 points to pad their 28-14 halftime lead.

It doesn't get any easier for the Monarchs next Friday when they host 2-0 Mar Vista from Imperial Beach. The Mariners blanked Francis Parker 31-0 Friday night with a rushing attack that reeled off 430 yards.
