Senior League World Series: Lemon Grove vs. Italy

The All-Stars are 2-0 after defeating Florida and New Zealand in pool play.

After back-to-back wins and a day off, the Lemon Grove Senior League All-Stars return to the field to take on Emilia, Italy, at 5 p.m. EST Wednesday in the Senior League World Series in Bangor, ME.

The All-Stars are 2-0 after defeating Florida and New Zealand. Italy is 1-1 in the tournament after winning its game 2-0 against New Zealand in pool play Tuesday.

According to the SLWS website, the team from Emilia defeated the Cape Town (South Africa) Little League 9-0 on July 14 to win the Europe-Middle East-Africa regional, held in Novara, Italy. A team from Italy has represented the EMEA at the series four years in a row.

The teams face off against each other in the 1,500-seat, $1.2 million Mansfield Stadium at Hayford Park. Built in 1991 with funds donated by horror writer and Bangor resident Stephen King, the field features about 2 1/2 acres of bluegrass sod, and six 90-foot light towers with 128 lights. It is considered one of the finest ballfields in Maine.

The high temperature today in Bangor is forecast to be 80° F, with a chance of showers, and thunderstorms are a possibility after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

The tournament is officiated by 12 umpires who come from each of the U.S. regions represented, plus Canada and Latin America. They have a combined total of 228 years of experience. They are:

Pool play takes place Sunday through Thursday. The semifinal is Friday, and the championship game is Saturday, Aug. 18. It will be broadcast on ESPN.

The All-Stars are the U.S. West champions, having beat the defending World Series champions Hilo, Hawaii, 6-0 for the regional title.

The Lemon Grove Senior League All-Stars are one of five regional teams from the United States in addition to the host district, Maine District 3, who will play in the 2012 Senior League Baseball World Series. Other teams are coming from Canada, Guatemala, New Zealand, and Italy.
