Operation Keeping Kids Safe on the Internet to be Held at the New Lemon Grove Library

Lemon Grove: Elected officials and representatives from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Lemon Grove School District, San Diego Futures Foundation, and Union Bank of California, will launch “Operation Keeping Kids Safe on the Internet” at the new Lemon Grove Library on Saturday, September 14, 2013, starting at 1 p.m. The library is located at 3001 School Lane, Lemon Grove, CA 91945. Sponsored by Thrive Lemon Grove, the event will serve as a one-stop shop, where families can learn directly from the San Diego County Sherriff’s Department about the hidden dangers found on the internet, how to keep children safe from predators in chat rooms, and help prevent cyber bullying. “Our children are fully connected to the world through the Internet. As they are growing, we teach them to make good choices in the world outside of our homes. In the same way, we need to teach them make safe choices online. Active parenting can help eliminate online risk-taking and support the proper and beneficial use of this very powerful tool,” said Lemon Grove School District Superintendent Ernest Anastos. The event will also provide tips on how to keep children safe while going to and from school; free child identification kits; share information on how to qualify for low cost computers and internet service; bring awareness of other available community resources; and will invite Lemon Grove residents to take a more active role in the community. Refreshments will be provided. “Children use the internet to chat and play games with their friends, watch movies, listen to music, and do their homework,” said Lemon Grove Councilmember Racquel Vasquez. “But real dangers lurk throughout the information highway. This event will empower parents with tools to keep their children safe and make surfing the internet a positive experience.” Thrive Lemon Grove is a new community group focused on improving neighborhoods, public safety, health, and the economy of Lemon Grove.
