Father of pitching star Robby Nesovic says Earley handled money in violation of district policy.
Updated at 9:35 p.m. May 18, 2012 Grossmont High School baseball coach Jim Earley, who resigned this week after ending the season with 20 straight losses, is under fire from a parent who accuses him of misusing money from the program and running a booster club that violates district rules. In a Nov. 9, 2011, memo to Principal Dan Barnes, Danilo “Dan” Nesovic made a series of complaints, including: The Grossmont Union High School District on Friday said Earley has retired, and East County Sports quoted Earley as saying: “I want to spend more time with my family, especially my two sons who are 9 and 10.” But documents obtained by Patch indicate four-year head coach Earley, as president of a nonprofit called Blue and Gold Baseball Inc., …

Cheers greet San Diego mayor's knock against rival Oakland, booed several times at event.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders on Friday night was among many civic lights and NFL stars to hail Junior Seau at his Celebration of Life at Qualcomm Stadium. He also got a dig in against Oakland Raiders fans. Sanders said perhaps the highest compliment paid Seau was that he was “always the object of the loudest, nastiest, stupidest chants from the knuckle-dragging hoard of subhumans otherwise known as Raider fans.’’ About a quarter of Qualcomm Stadium was filled on Friday night for a public memorial for the former San Diego Chargers linebacker, who was buried earlier in the morning in his native Oceanside. Several former Chargers shared stories at the Celebration of Life for Seau, who was found dead in his Oceanside home last week of a self…
Chargers great was saluted from near and far at free Qualcomm Stadium Celebration of Life.
Down on the stage, facing perhaps 15,000 fans, NFL and civic celebrities recalled Junior Seau. Up across Qualcomm Stadium, facing the setting sun, 31-year-old graphic artist Alex Gaytan* of Chula Vista was alone but for two strangers who saw him in the highest row of seats, and came to join him. “My first Chargers game, my dad brought me here when I was this high,” Gaytan said of his father, Jesus, still living. “It was up here. That was the first time I saw Seau play.” With blue GREATNE55 jerseys draped over adjacent seats, he explained: “So I figure there’s no better place to sit and pay my respects than by sitting next to 55. That’s why I’m here.” In Section 55. Near or far, all perspectives were represented Friday night at a free …

A private celebration for the former NFL star drew hundreds to Calvary Chapel in Oceanside Friday.
Watch for more coverage as Patch follows the public service for Seau at Qualcomm Stadium Friday evening. Hundreds of friends and family gathered at Calvary Chapel in Oceanside to remember Junior Seau—the NFL legend who took his life May 2 at his beach-front home. “It was beautiful,” said Lauren Godinet, Seau's niece, of Friday's celebration of life. The occasion filled with joy, he said, adding that eulogies by friends and family were held together by a common theme — her uncle’s smile. Her father, Wilson, said the service was “positive and uplifting.” “It just made you want to get closer to God,” he said. He saw relatives he hadn't seen for four decades. “(Junior) brought a lot of us together,” he said. Before his cousin’s death, Wilson…

The service will begin at 6:30 p.m.
A heavy-hitting lineup of former Chargers football players tops the speakers' list for Friday's memorial service for Junior Seau at Qualcomm Stadium, the team announced Wednesday. Quarterback Dan Fouts, safety Rodney Harrison and running back LaDainian Tomlinson will speak at the "Celebration of Life" honoring Seau, the ex- linebacker who fatally shot himself in the chest one week ago today. Harrison, in particular, has spoken passionately about how the 43-year-old Oceanside native mentored him after he was drafted. Other scheduled speakers include Bobby Ross, the head coach of the lone Chargers team to go to the Super Bowl; former Tampa Bay and Denver standout safety John Lynch; and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. The event begins at 6:30 …
Only one team in Major League Baseball has a worse record than the local professional ballclub.
The San Diego Padres are on a roll—having won two games in a row. Better yet, the 11-20 Friars are no longer the worst team in baseball. (Thank you, 8-21 Twins!) But mired in last place in the National League West, the Padres are 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Dodgers. (The horrors!) It could be worse. We could have paid $240 million for a player only to end up last, like the Angels. The question remains: Is the season over for the Padres? Or does hope remain for a May Miracle and pennant race?

Locals honored the former Chargers player Sunday.
Friends and fans of ex-Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, who killed himself Wednesday with a shot to the chest, held a paddle-out memorial in front of his waterfront home in Oceanside Sunday. The 43-year-old Oceanside native played 20 seasons in the National Football League, mostly for the Chargers, but also for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. In 1992, he created the Junior Seau Foundation, an organization formed to raise money and other resources for programs that educate young people and guide them on positive paths. The San Diego Chargers will host a public celebration of life* in honor of the former linebacker and community icon at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Qualcomm Stadium, according to team officials. Guest speakers …

Wolf Pack, Scotties set for league championships next week, followed by CIF competition.
With seniors on both teams receiving long-stem roses, Helix Charter High School beat visiting West Hills High 87-78 and 100-68, respectively, in their last league swim meet of the season. Senior Highlander Rosa Bebi is defending her CIF breaststroke championship next week as league championships begin May 9 followed by CIF competition May 16. Bebi, who says she has been swimming since 7 with the encouragement of her mother, lost only one race this season, a 200-meter freestyle. She has her sights set on swimming for UCSD next year. Other top swimmers for the Scotties are junior Victoria Nauman in the 100 IM and backstoke, and senior Kyle Sharp in the 50 and 100 butterfly. The Scotties head boys varsity coach is Joel Hull and the girls …

Thursday the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Junior Seau’s death was a suicide. The 43-year-old NFL legend died Wednesday inside his Oceanside home from a gunshot wound to the chest, which the Medical Examiner determined to be self-inflicted. Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Craig Nelson conducted the forensic autopsy, according to a news release from the county. The autopsy included a full inspection of Seau’s body and organs—and a host of laboratory studies, including a toxicology report and a microscopic examination of organs and tissues. The results of those tests will be part of the final autopsy report. Researchers outside of the medical examiner's office may study Seau's brain for repetitive injury if his family consents, …
