Leonel Sanchez covers news for Patch in San Diego County. Leonel has been a journalist for 24 years — or longer if one includes his time at San Francisco State University, where he graduated with a journalism degree. He worked at The San Diego Union-Tribune until July 2010, where he covered East County schools. He was the U-T's education writer in the region for five years, reporting on 10 school districts in the region for five years.
Leonel loves to spend time with his family, read, write and play sports. He listens to rock and rock and soul music as often as he can and walks out of the library with five or six books usually. He enjoys biographies, American history, sports, religion and astronomy.
As a volunteer, he helps organize a free journalism training workshop for high school students at Point Loma Nazarene University. He's involved with CCNMA Latino Journalists Association and is past president of the Society of Professional Journalists' San Diego chapter. He's been playing basketball since 12 and can sink a three-pointer with ease.
